Local history from the Rhins of Wigtownshire in south-west Scotland. When young men set out to war in 1914 they were expected to be home by Christmas. This heavily researched book is about the men whose names appear on the war memorials in the Rhins. It includes details of the lives and deaths of men from Stranraer, Leswalt, Kirkcolm, Cairnryan, Inch, Portpatrick, Stoneykirk, New Luce, Glenluce, and Kirkmaiden.

As well as stories of the men whose names appear on memorials, around a further fifty men's stories are given whose name, for whatever reason is not on a local memorial. At the end of the book there are moving letters sent home from the Front. Many photographs of the men are throughout the book. A must for the local historian, family research and it fits in well with the new Scottish Curriculum for National 4/5 in history. Since the book was published the author has been successful in her request to have one man's name added to a memorial, though his is just one of the many moving stories told here.
